Primate study adds to evidence of BPA harming human reproduction

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? A Washington State University researcher has found new evidence that the plastic additive BPA can disrupt women's reproductive systems, causing chromosome damage, miscarriages and birth defects.

Writing in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, WSU geneticist Patricia Hunt and colleagues at WSU and the University of California, Davis, report seeing reproductive abnormalities in rhesus monkeys with BPA levels similar to those of humans. By using an animal with the most human-like reproductive system, the research bolsters earlier work by Hunt and others documenting widespread reproductive effects in rodents.

"The concern is exposure to this chemical that we're all exposed to could increase the risk of miscarriages and the risk of babies born with birth defects like Down Syndrome," says Hunt. "The really stunning thing about the effect is we're dosing grandma, it's crossing the placenta and hitting her developing fetus, and if that fetus is a female, it's changing the likelihood that that female is going to ovulate normal eggs. It's a three-for-one hit."

The research also adds to the number of organs affected by BPA, or bisphenol A, which is found in plastic bottles, the linings of aluminum cans and heat-activated cash register receipts. This May, Hunt was part of another paper in PNAS reporting that the additive altered mammary development in the primate, increasing the risk of cancer.

Hunt's colleagues at UC, Davis exposed different groups of gestating monkeys to single daily doses of BPA and low-level continuous doses and looked at how they affected the reproductive systems of female fetuses. She saw that in the earliest stage of the adult's egg development, the egg cell failed to divide properly. Earlier mouse studies showed similar disturbances translated into genetic defects in the mature egg.

A fertilized egg with the wrong number of chromosomes will almost always fail to come to term, leading to a spontaneous abortion or progeny with birth defects.

In monkeys exposed continuously, Hunt saw further complications in the third trimester as fetal eggs were not packaged appropriately in follicles, structures in which they develop. Eggs need to be packaged properly to grow, develop and mature.

"That's not good," says Hunt, "because it looks to us like you're just throwing away a huge number of the eggs that a female would have. It raises concerns about whether or not she's going to have a really short reproductive lifespan."

Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai?s Controversial Wedding

After Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai went ahead with his wedding on 15 September, 2012, despite attempts to bar it by an estranged former partner, netizens of course took to Twitter and Facebook to express their thoughts.

Tsvangirai's former lover sought the court's order to stop the wedding on the ground that the two of them were married. He abandoned plans for a civil wedding and went ahead with a traditional one; Zimbabwe's customary laws allow for polygamy.

On Facebook, Tafadzwa Makanda posted:

Reactions on Twitter

@LanceGuma: Some people can't read PR trends. At #Locardia level the plot was working. Enter the SA woman & the overdose turned #Tsvangirai into victim.

@herzimbabwe: Is Morgan #Tsvangirai fit to be the leader of women? What are we feeling about all his love scandals as the electorate of Zimbabwe?

@percyzvomuya: Ah, Tsvangirai, why snub one woman for another? Why not do a couple of weddings? One in Harare, another in Bulawayo & make everyone happy?

@Zanele_20: Wonder how long Tsvangirai's wedding is goin to last this time.

LA Galaxy Vs. Toronto FC, 2012 MLS: Galaxy Clinch Playoff Spot, Into Second Place

Six months ago, Toronto FC eliminated the LA Galaxy from the CONCACAF Champions League, but a lot has happened since then. For example, we learned that LA is a very good team and Toronto are awful. We saw that on Saturday night as the two teams squared off again and this time the Galaxy prevailed 4-2 to clinch a playoff spot, while the Reds remain at the bottom of the MLS table.

Juninho continued his fine run of play in the 11th minute with the opening goal. After a foul just outside the box, Juninho curled the ball around the wall while a bewildered Freddy Hall watched as the ball found the net for the opening tally.

The Brazilian wasn't done, though. In the 33rd minute he hit an absolute rocket from 30 yards that left Hall no chance. The ball found the upper corner for an amazing goal that put LA two goals up.

Robbie Keane got in on the action three minutes later thanks to some fine play by Landon Donovan and Mike Magee. Donovan got down the left before cutting back for Magee, who took a gorgeous first touch the left the TFC defense in his wake. That forced the Reds to scramble and Keane wide open so Magee fed Keane and the Irishman gave LA a three-goal lead.

LA's big lead was completely deserved, too. They completely outclassed Toronto, who didn't even look like professionals, let alone capable of playing with a team in the form that LA is in right now. The Galaxy had all of the possession and chances, while the Reds just hacked away aimlessly and without success.

But once down three goals, TFC somehow found a way back in the match. Terry Dunfield scored from close range when Marcelo Sarvas decided that marking was optional and left him wide open in front of goal and in the 86th minute, Luis Silva scored as well.

Somehow, despite TFC looking truly dreadful and the Galaxy completely controlling the match, the Reds were only a goal down. But any hope that the visitors may have had vanished in stoppage time when Keane whiffed on a perfect pass from Donovan, but got it back and beat a defender before finishing well to ice the match.

The win didn't just clinch a playoff spot for the Galaxy, it put them into second place in the Western Conference. They are tied with Salt Lake on 49 points, but have a superior goal difference in the battle for second, while Seattle sits one point back.

Toronto is on just 22 points this season, five points back of anyone else. They looked even worse than that for most of Saturday night.

(AP) ? Space shuttle Endeavour apparently doesn't want to leave home.

NASA's youngest shuttle was supposed to depart Florida's Kennedy Space Center on Monday for its permanent museum home in Los Angeles. But stormy weather along the Gulf of Mexico nixed the travel plans until Wednesday morning.

The shuttle will be bolted to the top of a modified jumbo jet when it leaves Florida.

Endeavour will stop off in Houston, home to Mission Control, and fly low over NASA facilities en route. After a stop at Edwards Air Force Base in California, it will arrive at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday, a day later than planned.

Endeavour, which retired last year, will go on display at the California Science Center.

The Popinator voice-activated popcorn launcher: because greasy hands are just so 2011 (video)

The Popinator voiceactivated popcorn launcher because greasy hands are just so 2011 video

Before you ask: it looks like the real deal. Popcorn, Indiana has decided that it's just too much trouble to reach into that bag or bowl and has devised the Popinator, quite possibly the world's only smart popcorn launcher. A binaural microphone array on the machine's front listens for a clear "pop" command -- say the magic word and the Popinator will aim one of its many corn projectiles at your mouth, no hands required. We're still working to glean all the details, such as whether or not the snack delivery vehicle will be a commercial project and how much money it would take to install one at home (and, we'll admit it, the Engadget offices). In the meantime, you can hop past the break to catch one of the most appetizing and laid-back promo videos you've likely ever seen.

[Thanks, Peter]

Bulk Sale at 95.8% of Value | bubbleinfo.com

Bulk investors are willing to pay up to 95% of value for Fannie properties in Florida? All we hear is that foreclosures sell for 20% to 30% off ? but rarely do you see actual evidence. Hat tip to Daniel for posting this, from the latimes.com:

A San Diego real estate investment firm has won an auction of nearly 700 homes owned by Fannie Mae in Florida, part of a government initiative to sell vacant and distressed properties to investors.

Pacifica Companies, which describes itself on its website as a ?privately held, vertically integrated real estate developer, owner, investor and investment manager? was announced as the winner of the auction by the Federal Housing Finance Agency, regulator for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

The firm paid $78.1 million, or close to 96% of the properties? estimated worth.

Nearly 2,500 properties up for sale by Fannie Mae have been split up into eight geographic pools, and winning bidders are required to rent out the homes for at least three years.

The sale is a pilot program by the agency, intended to help clear the large numbers of foreclosed homes on the books of the two mortgage giants without crashing the housing market?s recovery.

Several hedge funds and other big investment groups backed with Wall Street money have lined up to bid on the homes. These big investors view a lucrative market for foreclosed homes converted to rental properties.

But groups associated with real estate agents, particularly the California Assn. of Realtors, have objected to the bulk sales of foreclosed homes to big firms, complaining that the housing market is actually suffering from a dearth of properties and could absorb more foreclosures.

Several Fannie Mae properties in the Inland Empire are up for bid. The winning bidders in other geographic areas will be announced in coming weeks, the federal housing agency said.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This purchase at 95.8% of value will quickly be swept under the rug by this one ? and/or doomers will say that the investors overpaid:
    1.??Find people wherever they hang out and bring them back home. If your audience likes to use YouTube then create videos, if they are businesses then check out LinkedIn, and if they are mostly consumers then put effort into engaging them in Facebook and attract them to your blog from there.?
    Chris Garrett,?Chris Garrett on New Media
    Chris Garret is a bad ass who knows his stuff. This is really one of the most powerful pieces of advice I?ve ever read. Why? Well because 90% of bloggers are focused on SEO or social media because that?s what other people are doing. When all they should really be focusing on is where their ideal audience hang out and on bringing them ?back home?.
    For example, you could look up the top 10 blogs & forums where your audience like to hang out. Find the blogs and start guest posting on all of them. If your audience are hanging out in a Facebook group, start participating in it. Find the most popular forums, create a user and participate.
    2.??Video is all of the rage these days, not only with people, but with search engines too. If you?d like to drive both direct and search engine traffic to your website, I?d recommend using video as part of your traffic generation arsenal. If you have a blog post, or a certain page on your website that you?d like to drive traffic to, create a short video that compliments the written content on your site. Upload it to YouTube, and make sure the name of the video and all of the tags are related to the keywords of the specific page on your blog, and be sure to insert the URL into the description of the video as well. Embed the video on your webpage, and make sure all backend meta, video description data all contain the keywords as well. Your blog post or webpage will now climb the ranks of the search engines, and you?ll also have direct/search traffic coming from the YouTube site of things as well. Additionally, you may end up on the first page of the SERPs for the video results related to those keywords as well.?
    Pat Flynn,?The Smart Passive Income Blog
    Pat has been one of the most popular bloggers in the online marketing space for some time. Since incorporating videos into his blog posts; his Youtube channel has gone on to receive more visitors than his entire blog! Always, use video in blog posts when possible.
    3.?Be everywhere, all at once.?It?s a strategy used to launch new Hollywood stars or models or movies, in fact. When something or someone gets plastered all over the media, people pay attention. Their brains think, ?This person has to be pretty important to be all over like this.? Then they think, What?s this all about, anyways? I don?t want to be the guy who doesn?t know what?s going on.? They?ll want to learn more to stay informed ? and it doesn?t take long before they do that, either. Instant traffic!?
    James Chartrand,?Men With Pens
    If you want to really establish yourself within your community; you need to be everywhere all at once. It?s pretty obvious why. Think about this?
    ?if you had a budget of $1000 to spend on advertising on Facebook, Google, Adcenter & guest blogging; would it be better to spread the budget across 3 months or spend it all in one week?
    Most likely you?d make a lot more money by spreading the entire promotion across a single week. Why? Simply because the people in your niche will see you everywhere for one week, multiple times daily. If your target audience are seeing you every day for a week, the chances are they?ll check you out.
    On the other hand, with a 3 month spread your audience might see you once every 10 days for 3 months. Being everywhere all at once gets attention, being seen on rare occasion will result in you being ignored.
    4?Focus on one topic, write great content, interview great people who are also in your niche = overnight success!?
    Everett Bogue,?Far Beyond the Stars
    Blogs with cult followings all focus on one subject. Blogs like mashable and forbes may be gigantic, but they don?t have loyal readers because they?re too broad. The only reason people read them is because they?re known as trusted sources for information.
    If you?re building a blog to monetize via advertising, the broader the focus the better. Think WebMD and Ehow, they write about every subject known to man and are well known trusted sources; however they don?t have real followings.
    To build a loyal following you need to focus on one topic, write amazing content, interview great people and build a community.
    5.??Reply to every comment from day one.?When someone comes by your blog and takes the time to leave a comment ? it demands recognition. Think about it ? there are millions of blogs out there ? we?re inundated with information ? so for someone to come to yours and take the time to respond, whether they agree or disagree ? that means something. Make an effort to respond to every single comment that comes through, and when you respond to each comment, work to continue the conversation ? follow up with another question. It may fall flat, they may never come back and read your response ? but in order for a blog to be successful, the conversation needs to go beyond the post itself. Budget time in your blogging schedule to make every effort to encourage an ongoing dialogue ? give people a reason to come back again and again.?
    Matt Cheuvront,?Life Without Pants
    Number five is very straight forward. Reply to every comment from day one. I try my best to reply to all comments, but sometimes I struggle to keep up with them. Whenever you receive a comment; try your best to reply to it and continue the conversation. When you reply to a comment; the initial commenter is going to come back to read your reply.
    Most commenters enjoy getting a response from blog owners; they think you?re a god like creature who?s an absolute expert in your niche. A comment reply instantly starts a connection between you and a reader. Usually resulting in another subscriber.
    6.?Don?t always focus on your own niche to find readers.?Chances are whatever you blog about, there are people who enjoy that topic too, even if they don?t blog about it. For example, I write about travel. I connect with a lot of travel bloggers but they aren?t the only people who enjoy reading about travel. The entire planet does. To expand my readership, I have guest blogged on finance websites talking about how to save money when you travel and blogged on life style design sites about living independently. Just don?t focus on your own niche! Branch out and get people who might not have ever come across your website!?
    Matt Kepnes,?Nomadic Matt?s Travel Site
    Focusing on one niche is important; but it doesn?t mean you can only reruit new readers in that niche. Most niches are too small for continual growth. The best way to recruit readers is to guest post on other blogs. The chances are ALL blog readers in your niche read at least two of the top 10 most popular blogs.
    Which means by guest posting on the top 10 most popular blogs; you?ll tap out your niche. You?ll put yourself in front of the entire niche?s audience. Once you?ve posted at least 5 times on the top 10-20 most popular blogs; it?s time to expand. Start by looking for blogs in niches similar to your own.
    If you?re in the online marketing niche; you could guest post on personal finance blogs. While the readers of personal finance blogs might not be currently?interested?in online marketing; the chances are they just don?t know about it. Don?t always focus on your own niche to find readers; a VERY important lesson from Matt Kepnes.
    7.??My approach is simply to try to provide as much value as I can.?I don?t view blogging as a job?I?ll go weeks without posting sometimes?I only do it when it?s something I find interesting or useful, and when I do post I?ll often spend 5 hours researching and crafting a good post. That doesn?t work for everyone, but it?s my approach.
    Another thing that is integral to your success is to build relationships with other, established bloggers who inspire you. From there, you can start to guest post on the most popular blogs related to your niche?frequently the biggest source of new traffic?and enlist others? help on your projects.?Cody McKibben,?Thrilling Heroics
    Cody makes an important point. Provide as much value as you can. Posting on regular intervals is crucial to a blog?s success. Most bloggers take the approach of having a strict publishing schedule so readers know when to check for new updates. On the other end of the spectrum; you can post only when you have something interesting to talk about.
    It depends on what you?re trying to accomplish. Generally the more active you are with your posting, the more ?residual traffic? you?ll build up from the search engines. But if you want really loyal followers who read your every word; only post when you have something truly valuable to share with your readers.
    Fuzz Free Food: Canh dau hu he (tofu chives soup)
    Canh dau hu he (tofu chives soup)
    As you know I haven?t been blogging much (well not at all) anymore, but I?d like to give you an update of what is going on. Since I stared running I?ve been able to lose 6 kilos in total! I?m still trying to get rid of the last couple of kilos, which are the hardest but I?m heading in the right direction. I?m on 58 right now and my goal is 55. I know it won?t make me happier, but it will for sure make me feel better about myself. There is no secret in losing weight and unfortunately there is no easy way to do it either. It?s something everyone knows, but so it?s hard to follow. All you need is to eat less and to exercise more. Easier said then done for sure. To loose the weight I had to cut back on carbs (only one carb meal a day, which for me is two sandwiches for lunch) and have as less carbs as possible for dinner. Sometimes a bit more and sometimes a bit less. And I?m running at least twice a week for 45 minutes per run. If possible every other day would be even better, but with the Dutch weather that is not always possible. No running in the rain for me. I eat a lot of veggies and salads and cut out most fried food. And I drink lots of water, at least 2 litters a day. No snacking?well ok every once a while in a blue moon?you?ve got to live a little right? I just love soups and it?s something I can eat every day. I pack mine with lots of veggies and some kind of protein; minced pork, beef or chicken. This is soup is inspired by some freshly grown Chinese chives. My mom grows them in their back yard and ask me to take some home. These plants are so strong, they keep coming back, even after the cold cold Dutch winters. It?s one of the easiest and fastest soup you can make and not only that, it?s also sort of healthy for you. At least that?s what I think =) You can make the stock with all kinds of meat, but I prefer pork. It?s what I grew up with so that?s what I?m using. My mom usually make it with thinly sliced pork, but since I had some pork ribs I used that. -????????? some pork (ribs or whatever you have at hand) -????????? salt, pepper -????????? 1 fresh tofu -????????? handful Chinese chives -????????? 1 tomato (I didn?t had one, but if I had I would put it in) -????????? 2 beaten eggs I cooked the pork ribs with some salt and pepper till tender. If I had a tomato I would quarter it and add that at this point. To have a clear broth I scooped the foam off a couple of times. You can cut the tofu anyway you like (mine were square) and add it to the broth. Boil everything till the tofu is cooked. I stirred in the eggs to get egg threads and just before I was ready to serve I added the chives.
    All I had to do then was to boil it for a couple of seconds and it was dinner time. For some extra flavour I sprinkled some spring onions on the top. I ate the soup just the way it is, but for those who love their carbs, you can also eat it with rice.
    Enjoy!
    Illinois jury finds Drew Peterson guilty of murdering third wife
    JOLIET, Illinois (Reuters) - An Illinois jury on Thursday found former Chicago-area police officer Drew Peterson guilty of murdering his third wife, Kathleen Savio, in a case that received national attention and spawned a popular television movie.
    Cheers erupted outside the courtroom in Will County, Illinois near Chicago after the verdict of first degree murder was read.
    Peterson was convicted of killing Savio in 2004 during a contentious divorce and then staging her death to look like an accident. Savio was found dead in a bathtub, and the death was initially ruled accidental. Suspicions were raised when Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, disappeared in 2007.
    "They got the murdering bastard," Mitch Doman, the brother-in-law of Savio, said following the verdict.
    Peterson remained impassive as the verdict was read and he was led from the courtroom in handcuffs.
    The former Chicago-area police sergeant had waged a high-profile public relations campaign asserting his innocence both in the death of Savio and the disappearance of Stacy Peterson, who has never been found and is presumed dead. Drew Peterson is the only suspect in her disappearance.
    "He was a thug," prosecutor James Glasgow said of Peterson after the verdict. "He threatened people because he had a gun and a badge."
    During closing arguments on Tuesday, the prosecution had asked the jury of seven men and five women to use common sense and consider witness testimony that Peterson threatened Savio, tried to hire a hit man and said he could make her death look like an accident.
    The defense argued that he should be acquitted because of the lack of physical evidence of his involvement in her death.
    "It's a very dark day in America when you can convict somebody on hearsay evidence," said defense lawyer Joe Lopez.
    The Illinois state legislature had passed a law in response to the case, dubbed "Drew's law," loosening requirements for circumstantial evidence.
    The conviction followed several requests from the jury to the judge over two days of deliberations. Earlier on Thursday, the jury had asked the judge to clarify the meaning of "unanimous."
    Will County Judge Edward Burmila replied that unanimous meant "its common meaning" -- that all 12 jurors would have to agree on a verdict.
    Jurors declined to speak publicly after the trial. In a short, handwritten statement, the group said they took the responsibility seriously and solemnly. "After much deliberation, we have reached a decision that we believe is just."
    The Peterson case was the inspiration for a popular Lifetime television network movie based on the case, "Untouchable," starring Rob Lowe.
    Glasgow said he will now aggressively review evidence that could lead to murder charges against Pederson stemming from the disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy.
    Peterson will be sentenced in the Savio case on November 26 and faces a sentence of 20-60 years in prison. His first and second wives have remarried.
    VW launches lighter, more fuel-efficient Golf
    FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? Volkswagen is gearing up its marketing campaign for the latest version of its mainstay Golf hatchback ? the seventh version of a vehicle that has sold 29 million copies since in 1974.
    The new Golf looks a lot like the old one from the outside, but has been completely redesigned mechanically.
    The new car is slightly longer but is about 100 kilograms, or 220 pounds, lighter. That means better mileage, helped by engine features such as cylinder deactivation and a stop-start system. The diesel version gets up to 3.8 liters per 100 kilometers (62 mpg).
    The company said Wednesday that the new Golf will go on sale Nov. 10 in Germany.
    The basic model starts at ?16,975 ($21,353) ? same as the old one. Prices go up from there.
    September ? The Month for Family Health | Red Toenails
    Provided by Microsoft
    Nothing can zap you of joy and strength quicker than dealing with illness.? Truth be told, we can?t foresee everything but we can be more watchful as a whole when it comes to our health.
    I was watching a game show one time when the host asked the contestant how often should we floss our teeth.? She said at least once a week!? Okay.? That?s just a small example of how off point some of us are when it comes to our health.
    While we don?t want to be fanatics ? hypochondria ain?t cute ? we do want to take reasonable precautions.? September seems to be the month when a lot of organizations are trying to raise awareness on women?s, men?s, children?s and family?s health issues.? While there are too many to mention them all, I?ve managed to highlight a few that might pique your interest:
    Children
    National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month
    Obesity is now at an epidemic level among our kids according to the National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month website.? More than 23 million children and teenagers in the U.S. alone (ages 2-19) are obese and overweight.
    Please visit their website in order to see what you can do or even where you can get help with this health issue.
    Newborn Screen Awareness Month
    Newborn screenings are very important.? Some kinds of screenings are even mandated by law.? But more to the point, this type of screening can save many individuals from a life of suffering due to an undetected but totally treatable disease.
    Please visit Savebabies.org ?in order to join the fight to raise awareness regarding the importance of newborn screening.
    Women
    Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month
    I was amazed at the fact that ovarian cancer (more than 20,000 women diagnosed yearly in the U.S. alone) cannot be detected by the Pap test.? In fact, there is no early detection test for ovarian cancer at all.? The only thing we have in the way of early detection is awareness ? being aware of what early symptoms are and being proactive when they are present.
    To learn about early detection, click here.
    National Women?s Health and Fitness Day
    Although all the days and issues presented here are important, this is one that I am very excited about.? Speaking from the perspective of a woman that has a little fluff around the edges if you know what I mean!? National Women?s Health and Fitness Day is officially held on September 26, 2012.? So that means you have time to prepare.
    This day is the nation?s largest annual health promotion event for women of all ages.? What can you do to get involved?? Visit Fitnessday.com.
    Men
    Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
    Zero is an organization that is passionate about the mission of not only decreasing prostate cancer among men, but totally eradicating it.? And it?s easy to see why they feel this way, especially when the National Cancer Institute indicated that, ?A total of 241,740 new cases of prostate cancer and 28,170 deaths from the disease are anticipated in the United States in 2012??
    Zero donates to research on federal and local levels.? Click here to find out more about their initiative.
    Family
    RAINN Day ? Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network
    RAINN Day is September 27, 2012.? It was interesting to discover that RAINN has a number of programs.? Some programs help victims; others educate the public about sexual violence prevention.? What may not be known is that this agency it also helps obtains convictions of rapists as well.? This is a marvelous organization for a very important cause.
    They have set up a National Sexual Assault Hotline that works along with local rape hotlines.? They are a strong resource that is referred to by many individuals and organizations alike.? They have forged incredible community partners in order to educate the public regarding this issue.
    If you need help or know someone who does, please contact RAINN or call the hotline at 1800.656.HOPE (4673).
    Family Health and Fitness Day
    Family Health and Fitness Day is September 29, 2012.? Why is this day so important?? Because it?s all about your family?s well-being.? Now you can?t beat that!? Even though it?s recognized nationally, there will be many local events held to promote this health issue.
    Get involved!? For event details, check it out.
    Defoe says he can lead England attack
    Jermain Defoe has told England coach Roy Hodgson that he is capable of leading the attack in the absence of Wayne Rooney and Andy Carroll.
    With Rooney sidelined with a gashed thigh and Carroll ruled out with a hamstring injury, Hodgson will have fewer options than he would like when it comes to selecting his forward line for Friday's opening World Cup qualifier in Moldova.
    Hodgson has gone with a lone striker in most of his England matches and that doesn't seem the perfect fit for Defoe, whose diminutive stature isn't ideally suited to the physical demands of taking on two imposing centre-backs.
    But the injuries mean Hodgson may have no choice but to go with Defoe and the Tottenham forward, who scored a superb goal in England's last match, a 2-1 friendly win over Italy, is convinced he is up to the challenge after playing the same role for his club this season.
    "I have been playing the lone striker for my club and I have enjoyed it," Defoe said.
    "To be honest playing with good players it is not really a problem if people get close.
    "It we get to control the game in midfield when we get a chance we have to take it."
    England will be firm favourites to kick off their qualifying campaign with a victory no matter who Hodgson selects as his striker, but Defoe cautioned his team-mates to guard against complacency.
    The Moldovans will be desperate to spring an upset and Defoe believes the key to avoiding an embarrassment is to deliver an early statement of intent with the first goal.
    "They will make it hard and sit behind the ball and try to frustrate us," Defoe said. "I have played in a number of games against the so-called smaller countries and it's difficult to get the first goal.
    "You look at the fixtures and some might think it should be an easy game. It's important to be professional and patient and it helps when you get an early goal.
    "It's going to be difficult and the first 20 minutes will be really important. They're two big games and if we can win them it will be good for everyone."
    Meanwhile, Defoe's England colleague Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain insists the onus is on the rest of the side to help out the sole striker against Moldova and in the following week's qualifier against Ukraine at Wembley.
    "It's not just a responsibility on us, there's a responsibility on everyone - we're playing for England," he said.
    "There's goals all over the team. I think Phil Jagielka scored in the last game.
    "We'll be all looking to score. I don't think there's too much pressure on one individual position."
    Arsenal midfielder Oxlade-Chamberlain got his first taste of competitive international football during Euro 2012 -- when he was a surprise call-up to the squad -- and the teenager admits he is still coming to terms with life as an England player.
    "I'm not sure yet what to expect," he said. "I'm just looking forward to it and if I do get the shout I'll do my best.
    "You can never rest on your laurels otherwise I won't get back in these squads. Going to the Euros has made me want to get into as many squads as possible."
